PHE Projects Already Use Elements of HIPs

Most PHE projects carry out activities that align with elements of select HIPs, even if the activities are not identified as or deliberately tied to HIPs.

Examples of PHE Projects That Include Activities From HIPs

IMMEDIATE POSTPARTUM FAMILY PLANNING

Offer contraceptive counseling and services as part of facility-based childbirth care prior to discharge from the health facility.

COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS

Integrate trained, equipped, and supported CHWs into the health system.

SOCIAL MARKETING

Support distribution of a wide range of contraceptive methods and promotion of health family planning behaviors through social marketing.

MOBILE OUTREACH SERVICES

Support mobile outreach service delivery to provide a wide range of contraceptives, including long-acting reversible contraceptives and permanent methods.

DRUG SHOPS AND PHARMACIES

Train and support drug-shop and pharmacy staff to provide a wider variety of family planning methods and information.

FAMILY PLANNING AND IMMUNIZATION INTEGRATION

Offer family planning information and services proactively to women in the extended postpartum period during routine child immunization contacts.

POLICY

Develop, implement, and monitor supportive government policies.

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Develop an effective supply chain management system for family planning so that women and men can choose, obtain, and use the contraceptive methods they want throughout their reproductive life.

ADOLESCENT-FRIENDLY CONTRACEPTIVE SERVICES

Incorporate adolescent-friendly service delivery elements into existing contraceptive and health services.

DIGITAL HEALTH FOR SYSTEMS

Use digital technologies to support health systems and service delivery for family planning.

Many PHE projects implement activities that align with elements of HIPs in the Enabling Environment category through policy work with decisionmakers like ministers or county governors.2 PHE projects with a focus on sustainability often support policy implementation through training and public sector assistance, activities included in the Policy HIP.3 For example, the Mahefa Miaraka project in Madagascar supports the public health sector to manage a network of community health volunteers as part of a government plan to reduce maternal, child, and newborn mortality and morbidity.4 This project partners with the Ministry of Public Health and conservation organizations, and is part of the Madagascar PHE network. Thus, community health volunteers are cross-trained on the links between human and ecosystem health.
